Huntsville
Literacy Council

Our Motivation
Founded in 2024, the Huntsville Literacy Council strongly believes that developing a healthy reading habit in a child's early years can foster a love of learning that will last a lifetime!
Strong reading skills provide the foundation for success in all areas of knowledge, allowing us to process information, improve communication and enhances critical thinking.

Many studies in children's psychology agree that reading regularly not only improves grammar, vocabulary and language, but also enhances imagination, empathy and attention span.

Books can open up a world of wonders!
At the HLC we are strongly committed to give every child the opportunity to access these wonders by helping them to reach a proficient level of literacy and develop a passion for reading.

Our Goals
According to 2024 national statistics, the state of Alabama has one of the lowest literacy rates in the country!
About 72% of Alabama's 4th grade students are not reading at a proficient level.

In 2019, the Alabama Literacy Act (ALA) was signed into law to ensure that public school students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of third grade.

At the HLC, we wish to embrace this wonderful Alabama initiative through providing much needed logistic support to public schools. Our main goal is to improve the level of literacy of 3rd grade students in the Huntsville City School system, so that no student is left behind in 3rd grade for lack of reading proficiency.
